THE YEAR OF THE DISCOVERY
(El año del descubrimiento)
a documentary by Luis López Carrasco, 2020, 200', DCP, color
In 1992 in Spain the Barcelona Olympic Games and the Seville Expo were held, linked to the celebration of the 5th Centenary of the Discovery of America. Spain is presented to the international community as a modern, developed and dynamic country. However, in a south-eastern town, Cartagena, the protests because of the industrial crisis became increasingly violent and would result in a mass uprising that culminate in the burning of the parliament of the Autonomous Community. In a cafeon the outskirts of the city, neighbors, young and unemployed people share dreams, daily worries and family stories. They intertwine working class’ memories from the end of the Civil War to the present. Gradually, the echo of the 1992 revolt approaches.
